The rides inventors realised that the experience could be enhanced by halting the ride just as you drop over the precipice. The halt (about one second) is just long enough for the terrified brain to signal the release of huge amounts of adrenalin into the body. This ‘drug flood’ slows the perception of time, heightens anxiety and generally adds to the feeling of terror.
